How to Choose and Place an Area Rug in Your Home

An area rug is the perfect tool to update a room or personalize a rental space, but finding the perfect one for your space can sometimes be a difficult task. When shopping for an area rug, keep in mind where you’ll be using it, what colors you want, what type of texture you desire and the size of the rug you’ll be needing.

Color
Color is probably the first thing you’re going to consider when it comes to finding an area rug colorfor your room. You can play it safe with a solid colored rug, especially if the rest of your space is bold and colorful. A neutral rug with a subtle pattern is perfect for a bright and colorful room, as well.

If you’re getting ready to redecorate a room, you might consider picking the area rug first, especially if you’re drawn to rugs with multiple colors or unique patterns. All in all, you’ll want to make sure your area rug nicely compliments the furniture, accessories and wall colors in whatever room it is in.

Texture
Just like when you mix textures and patterns in your wardrobe, mixing textures in your home is a great way to enhance the overall look of a room. If you already have furniture picked out, textureusing that texture as a guide is a good place to start.

You don’t need to match the existing texture if you don’t want to, though. For instance, a soft and fluffy rug pairs fantastically with a smooth, leather couch.

Don’t forget to be practical when choosing your texture. If you have kids or pets, sticking to a 100 percent wool rug is a great option. It’s easy to clean, and even easier to maintain.

Size and Placement
Before you begin shopping for your rug, measure your seating area in order to make sure your placement 1shopping efforts are as productive as possible. And remember, an area rug doesn’t necessarily have to be the same size as the room.

In a living room, an area rug should fit the size of the seating area. Ideally, you will want your furniture to be on the rug, but it does not always have to fit completely under the furniture. A good rule of thumb is to plan for the front legs of your furniture to be on, or touching, the area rug.

Other experts suggest you should choose a rug that is two feet shorter than the smallest wall in your room. The size of the rug also depends on what the space is being used for. In a dining room, a rug should ideally extend 18 inches past the table. An area rug under a dining room table should be long enough that as chairs are pulled away from the table, they remain on the rug.
